Hi folks, hope you're all well and had a good weekend.

I'm not sure if every you've thought too much about this, or maybe you have a better idea.  But...  Ever wondered about where to find a cheap but a good quality surface/background to some of the close up images you might want to shoot ?

Well.. I'm sure we've all used bed sheets for backdrops (or maybe that's just me) but recently I've started using tiles to create quality surfaces and back drops for some of my images.  Floor tiles and large wall tiles are obviously best but most importantly they are relatively cheap as well.  You can spend an awful lot of cash on just a single tile but you don't need to.  I spent around £9 on a large black granite tile at the weekend to photograph a potato (hoping to be accepted) but average is around £5 for a good quality, large tile and small tiles will only cost around 35p each.

You may find that the floor tiles aren't as reflective as the wall tiles but it depends what you want out of the image and you can allways coat the tile with something else to produce a different effect.  I'm still experimenting at the moment, but so far I'm pretty happy with the result.  Hope you find this tip useful  Smiley

Ps.
(I used a towel for the image of the forks Wink )

Thanks very much for the tips Dave.  I have been pondering this topic for quite some time now.  I too have tried sheets, towels, boxes ...  The tiles I imagine are great for reflecting the object also if you were after the effect.  I really need to spend a day at the DIY store having a mooch.  Also need to work out a decent lighting arrangement that can be permanently set up.
